Norma Fay Nicholson is the Founder and CEO of Youth Empowerment Services, a not-for-profit organization that focuses on youth justice in Canada. Norma holds an MA in Adult Education and a BA in Sociology and Psychology, and is a retired RN with over 40 years of experience in healthcare leadership. A five-time self-published author of nonfiction books, she utilizes these books as educational tools to reach children, youth, and their families, enhancing their knowledge of the Canadian Youth Justice System. She facilitates public education forums essential to strengthening the safety and well-being of Black and Minority Families. She is a dynamic public speaker who delivers educational content in schools, community youth programs, workshops, conferences, and various community spaces, both large and small. She collaborates with community stakeholders to connect literature with education, enhancing literacy, critical thinking, empowerment, and understanding of complex issues that affect Black and Minority communities. In her recently published book, END, Incarceration of Black and Minority Youth, she shared lived experiences of the trauma that these youth encounter in communities and when incarcerated. She strongly believes in educating children and families about prevention and intervention before any child encounters the justice system. She is an ardent community volunteer who mentors youth in diverse programs away from the criminal youth justice system to give them second chances to work toward their potential. She is a lifelong learner who continually enhances her knowledge through volunteering with various organizations as an advisor or Board Director. She recently received the Lois Rice Lifetime Award in Community Volunteering Contact Norma to engage her in conferences/workshops and other educational outreach. The opportunities are created by the teacher and the classroom environment.
The challenges occur when there is no consistent and caring approach.

THE ADOLESCENCE YEARS
Be the first to comment on how teens can be supported during their adolescent years.
IN THEIR OWN VOICES by Stepping Stones: Be patient, some people don’t know what they want to do or who they are until they are 25 or 45. Don’t give up and dont’ be afraid
This is the age when a young person may become depressed.

LIVE IN THE PRESENT
Norma Fay Nicholson Volunteer Profile 2025
Associated Youth Services of Peel

“Life’s legacy is not what we leave behind. It is the way
we impact lives now. It’s also how those folks will, in turn,
impact the lives of others. I take great pride in being a
Volunteer in the youth justice program at AYSP. I have
experienced personal growth. I have learned new skills and made
new friends. I have also been recognized as someone who has
many applicable volunteer skills that I happily share. I
have a sense of purpose and fulfillment by positively
impacting young lives. Just seeing how one person can
Impact the lives of many, makes me a kinder and caring person
VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION
Never be a prisoner of your past
It was just a lesson
Not a life sentence
One of the many beautiful ways in which volunteering can help you live in the present is by creating a sense of purpose, finding a sense of belonging and leaving a legacy.
